Only about ten minutes from Kiama and neighbouring on to the village of Gerroa, Gerringong New South Wales is the perfect coastal holiday town for all the family to enjoy. Housing just a population of 4,000 people, many of which are retired Australians relaxing in retirement, this beautiful and naturally sculpted seaside paradise offers lots of interesting and traditional things to do.
First off just experiencing the atmosphere and taking in the scenery should be high on your list of activities. There are many trails and walks that take you through the area so you can really see the beauty of the region. There’s nothing stopping you going on a drive through the countryside before stopping off for a picnic.
Sloping up and down and covered in forestry, this picturesque landscape winds around on to some of the finest stretch of beach in Australia. Here you can enjoy many different traditional seaside activities, such as beach cricket, volleyball, or sunbathing. The most adventurous of your group may also want to take up some water sports. You can hit the popular surfing spots or hire a boat to go out in the magically pure water.
Gerringong’s economy is based around dairy farming and many of the old fashioned farms are still in use, making them a great place to visit along with nearby historical buildings. There are also several vineyards that allow visitors to take a tour and more importantly test the wine! If you really want to soak in the history of the town a trip to the Heritage Museum should be next on your agenda. Here you can discover how the area looked through the ages, along with scale model buildings and photo archives. A particular favorite is the archives on the 1920’s racing that used to take place along the Seven Mile Beach.
A good place to take the children is to one of the several wildlife parks and nature reserves. The children can see a number of native Australian animals such as kangaroos and wombats up close, as well as learning about their habitats from experienced staff.
If you come during the summer months, in December there is a big street parade and outdoor concert as a prelude to the Christmas celebrations.
