Directions from Sydney
There are two ways of getting to the south coast of NSW from Sydney: the scenic route via the Grand Pacific Drive, or the faster, still scenic, but not so drop dead amazing as the Grand Pacific Drive.
The freeway: Take the Princes Highway out of Sydney, following signs to Wollongong. Just after Sutherland, the Princes Highway turns into the F6 freeway (speed limit 110km/hr). This freeway takes you past Wollongong to around Shellharbour, where it turns into the Princes Highway again. Voila! You've hit the south coast.
Grand Pacific Drive: Take the Princes Highway out of Sydney. At Loftus take a left of the Highway into the Royal National Park (Tourist Drive 10). Drive through the magnificent Royal National Park (the world's second oldest). Stop at Audley and hire a row boat on the Port Hacking River. Or visit the beautiful beaches of Wattamolla, Garie or Bundeena. Drop in at the Hindu Temple at Helensburgh or the native animal Symbio Wildlife Gardens.
Continue driving to Otford and Bald Hill, for a spectacular view down the coast to Wollongong. Stop at Bald Hill to watch the hang gliders and para gliders (take a turn yourself). Then wind down the hill past Stanwell Park along Lawrence Hargrave Drive. Why not spend your first two nights at Kallaroo, a delightful cottage perched on the cliff at the southern end of Stanwell Park Beach. Watch whales and dolphins from the deck or even from your bed as most rooms have amazing views of the Pacific Ocean.
After your weekend here, traverse the magnificent 665metre over-the-ocean Sea Cliff Bridge between Coalcliff and Clifton. The road takes you on to the bustling townships of Thirroul, Austinmer then onto Wollongong.
From Wollongong, it's only a short hop to Shellharbour (stay in the elegant seaside home of Coasting on the Point), then to the emerald of the northern south coast, Kiama. Gerringong and Gerroa are only 10 more minutes away and deserve not only a visit, but you can base yourselves here to visit Jamberoo Action Park, the Shoalhaven, Jervis Bay and Kangaroo Valley.
