When visiting the South Coast of Australia, the wonderful area Kiama should definitely be high on your list of locations to experience. One of its more popular attractions is the Kiama Harbour, a peaceful and beautiful part of the town; an area that will definitely give you some great holiday photos and memories.
If you are looking for a little more seclusion to your holiday or vacation, the Kiama Harbour would be ideal for you. It’s quiet, calm and authentic. There’s nothing better than staying in one of the seaside cabins, waking up in the morning to the fresh sea air and taking a boat out to do some fishing, before returning to cook a hearty fresh food dinner. Afterwards you can take a trip to the Harbour market or amaze the children with the nearby rock pools.
Despite not being deep in forestry, wildlife is still abundant at Kiama Harbour, and one of the more endearing critters is the crafty pelican, that won’t think twice about saying hello, or stealing your lunch. You’ll find them populating the rocks and posts of the harbour, and because they have become such an accepted part of the community, locals built a proud metal statue in their honour.
Another point of interest in the Kiama Harbour area is the grand lighthouse that stands overlooking the rocky waters. Built in the 1800’s there is a lot of history and a lot of stories to tell. Next to the harbour, naturally formed out of rocks is the famous Kiama blowhole, which never ceases to amaze. The water pressure build-up erupts like a volcano, but be sure to stand at a distance, unless you of course want to get wet. There are two angles to experience this phenomenon, one from the balcony near the lighthouse, and the other down the steps, up close and personal.
If you are looking to get away from it all, but still have enough activities and sights to keep you occupied, then you can’t go wrong with the charming Kiama Harbour, or anywhere on the South Coast of Australia for that matter.
