About Stanwell Park

 |
Stanwell Park is a small coastal village of around 1500 people, located about 52 km from central Sydney and one hour from Sydney’s International and Domestic Airport. In addition to Stanwell Pakr accommodation, their is a glorious surfing beach tucked below the dramatic, densely forested cliffs of the Illawarra escarpment.
To get there, take the electric train from Central Station, Sydney (it’s about one hour by train) or drive south out of Sydney along the Princes Highway, then turn left past Sutherland into the Royal National Park. Sydney’s Royal National Park, established in 1879, is Australia’s first and the world’s second oldest national park. America’s Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming (extending into Montana and Idaho) was established in 1872.

The home of flight
The steep cliffs of the Illawarra escarpment and coast provide the strong air currents make this a prime spot for hang-gliders. Sit on Bald Hill, to the north of Stanwell Park, for a spectacular view of these adventurous fliers. Local adventure tour operators can even take you along for the ride of a lifetime with a tandem flight or simply sit back and relax on a scenic flight across the region.
Stanwell Park is famous for flight. In 1893 it became the home of Lawrence Hargrave, explorer, inventor of the box kite and one of the founding fathers of modern aviation. He carried out experiments with box kits on Bald Hill above his house. You can see him on the Australian orange coloured $20 bill.
See the Festival of Flight in November, the town’s carnival, a feisty celebration with an aeronautical theme.
