The Dharawal nation occupied the south coast from Stanwell Park and Bulli in the north to the Shoalhaven and Kangaroo Valley in the south. This area is still called Dharawal. Nowra, the seat of the Shoalhaven City Council on the southern side of the Shoalhaven River about 160kms from Sydney, takes its name from a native word for the Black Cockatoo.

Also be sure to visit Bundanon www.bundanon.com.au , Arthur and Yvonne Boyd's gift to the nation. Boyd is one of Australia's greatest artists of the 20th century. His and his wife's gift of the Bundanon properties and collections has given Australia a unique cultural and environmental asset. Take a tour of the National Estate listed homestead and Arthur Boyd's studio and see art works from four generations of Boyds. There are self guided walks of old growth and subtropical rainforest and inspiring landscapes of Pulpit Rock and the Shoalhaven River. The Bundanon Trust was established in 1993 to develop a 'living arts centre' with the purpose of promoting arts practice and enjoyment in all disciplines. The Trust's three core programs provide access to a wide range of groups from practicing artists to school students and the general public. The award winning Boyd Education Centre on the Riversdale property next door is open several times a year and available for venue hire to school groups, art, environmental, educational or training groups. The Centre was designed by renowed Australian architect Glen Murcutt.

For spectacular views of the area, take a drive up Cambewarra Mountain (past Cambewarra Winery - drop in at the Cellar Door) to the Lookout where you can sip tea, eat scones and drink in the view right down the coast.

Or take a cruise on the Shoalhaven River one of the most majestic rivers in the world. Cruise downstream to the mouth of the river at Crookhaven - the river captain jumps ship here and buys everyone fish and chips for the return journey. Or travel upstream to take in the sandstone gorges and rolling farmland on either side of the vast river.

Leave Nowra and travel east through the river flats, past Pyree with its historic homesteads to the fishing port of Greenwell Point. Stop here to get some fish and chips and famous Greenwell Point oysters!

From here it's just a short trip across to Currarong, then Culburra Beach, Callala Bay, Callala Beach and bush paradise on the Currumbene Creek, Myola, on the northern end of Jervis Bay.

The first Europeans to visit the area were the navigators George Bass and Matthew Flinders (famous for being the first recorded explorers to circumnavigate Australia) who named the Shoalhaven River in 1796. The first settlers in the region were cedar cutters in the early 19th century, followed by graziers in 1812. Mary Reiby (who can been seen on the $20 note) was granted land south of the Shoalhaven River in 1824. She was transported as a convict to Australia in 1792 and went on to become one of the colony's wealthiest women. In 1887, the Illawarra Railway from Sydney to Wollongong was completed and now continues as far south as the town of Bomaderry on the northern side of the Shoalhaven River.
