The Wadi Wadi aborigines (part of the Dharwal nation) were the first people to inhabit this valley. In 1826, 79 of them remained, but like the kangaroos that the valley was named after, they have since disappeared.

This area is so beautiful, the National Trust classified the town of Kangaroo Valley in 1977. This doesn't mean that Kangaroo Valley accommodation is hard to come by. The Hampden Suspension Bridge with its remarkable castellated sandstone towers which look like the turrets of a medieval castle was built in 1898. It is reputedly the oldest surviving suspension bridge and the third largest in NSW. It spans the Kangaroo River on the road from Kangaroo Valley to Moss Vale. There are picnic and BBQ facilities on both sides of the river. The Kangaroo River is a wonderful spot to stop for picnics, a spot of fishing, a swim or to do a bit of bushwalking or canoeing (canoes can be hired adjacent to the bridge).

Pioneer Museum Park (02) 4465 1306. Open 10-4pm Mon, Fri, Sat, Sun. Open 7 days during school holidays. Walk through old pioneer homes filled with the original furniture, clothes and tools. The grounds are laid out to resemble a real rural pioneer settlement and include an old school house.

Fitzroy Falls Visitors Centre: (02) 4887 7270. Open 7 days, 9am-5.30pm. A modest park fee assists NSW Parks and Wildlife maintain the extensive visitor facilities here. Find information about walks in the Morton National Park. Extensive facilities for people with disabilities, including a boardwalk to the two main lookouts; The Falls Cafe; picnic shelters and coin-operated barbecues.

The Wildflower Walk along the eastern rim of the escarpment starts at the visitor centre and winds through bushland and fern gullies, taking in extensive views down the Yarrunga Valley. An excellent walk on a well defined track (2 hours).

The walk along the western edge of the escarpment also starts at the visitor centre and has great views of the valley from lookouts along the track. Twin Falls, Fitzroy Falls and Lady Hordern Falls are a feature of this walk. From the final lookout retrace your steps to the visitor centre (80 mins return).

Manning Lookout is located just a short drive from Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre along the Nowra Road. Take the turn off just 1km east past Myra Vale Road. From the car park, a walking track leads to a lookout offering excellent views of Kangaroo Valley.

Belmore Falls are reached via Mura Vale Road. Approximately 4km from the turn off you cross Barrengarry Creek at the top of the falls. Follow the one way road to Hindmarsh Lookout car park. A track leads off to four lookouts located along the eastern edge of the escarpment. There are excellent views of the valley and across to the falls.
