VIEW RESTAURANTS AND CAFES

Gerroa is a laid back holiday town at the northern end of the long and peaceful Seven Mile Beach. Located 130km south of Sydney (about 2hrs), the village was once a popular retreat for various religious orders. Some of the land in the area is still owned by churches although since the property boom after 2000, many houses and much land was snapped up by seachangers and wealthy retirees.

There is a park and picnic ground (with BBQ facilities) and a fabulous cafe the Seahaven, which won the Best Cafe in Australia in 2006 - visit it and find out why! (02 42343796)

Also visit the Gerroa Boat Fisherman's Club (the Fishos) for a million dollar view of Seven Mile Beach. The club is open 7 days from 10am to 9.30pm. Dine at the Seahorse restaurant (02 42340044).

Seven Mile Beach is known to be the best beach on the east coast of Australia for windsurfing. There are a myriad of other water activities here, from board and body surfing (take a lesson with the surf schools here), scuba diving, river and rock fishing, kayaking and canoeing, or stay on land and cycle, bushwalk or just try some winetasting at the Crooked River Winery.

History: The first Europeans to set foot in the area were probably the survivors of the wreck of the Sydney Cove who, in 1797, made their way from Preservation Island in Bass Strait to Sydney. Only three of an initial 17 survived the ordeal. Their reports prompted George Bass to undertake a southern voyage of exploration later that year. He sailed alongside Seven Mile Beach and crossed the shoals at the entrance to the Crookhaven river which he named the Shoalhaven.

Seven Mile Beach became a venue for horseracing as early as the 1860s and, later for car and bike races - the speed of 100 miles per hour was first recorded on land in Australia at this beach. Gold was reputedly discovered in its black sand in 1894.

In 1933 Seven Mile Beach was used by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith as the runway for the first commercial flight between Australia and New Zealand. Flares were lit on the beach to mark out the runway and several thousand people came from Sydney and the local area to witness the 2.30am take-off, turning on their car headlights to provide the aviators with extra illumination.
