Gerringong is located around 90 minutes south of Sydney and 2 hours from Canberra (or 20 minutes from Wollongong Airport at Albion Park where flights from Melbourne land and take off weekdays).
Here you will find some of the best cafes and restaurants in the area, with exceptional clothes shops and homewares. The village boasts the largest surfwear shop (Natural Necessity) in the southern hemisphere! And that's because the town is full of surfers, young and old. Werri Beach at Gerringong boasts some of the best breaks on the coast.
The Old School Park next to the Town Hall in the heart of Gerringong is an ideal spot to stop, have lunch and let children play in the playground and green space. Park in Noble Street at the back of the part, and drink in one of the best views on the South Coast towards Werri Beach. Then pop across Fern Street to the shops and cafes.
The Heritage Museum in Blackwood Street is open on weekends with displays that include Kingsford Smith's historic flight across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand. You can see a memorial to Kingsford Smith on the top of the hill into Gerroa. In 1933 Seven Mile Beach was used by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith as the runway for the first commercial flight between Australia and New Zealand. Flares were lit on the beach to mark out the runway and several thousand people came from Sydney and the local area to witness the 2.30am take-off, turning on their car headlights to provide the aviators with extra illumination.
In Belinda Street you will find the Gerringong Pub which has been run by the Cronin family since the 19th century - Mick Cronin played rugby league for the Parramatta Eels during the 1970s and 1980s. The pub (and town of Gerringong) featured in the 2001 Australian film by David Caesar, Mullet, which received its world premier at the Gerringong Town Hall! Pics and Flics shows movies at the Gerringong Town Hall in Fern Street the first Friday of every month at 7.30pm - always a wonderful place to be!
