Berry - the Town of Trees
Berry is an historic town situated on the Princes Highway about 2 hours south of Sydney and around 2.5 hours from Canberra. It is full of old homes - many classified by the National Trust - which include the Court House that often hosts art shows (or weddings!), the School of Arts where there is the occasional antiques show and a fascinating Museum.
Berry was orginally a private town named after the pioneer Alexander Berry who established in 1822 'Coolangatta' a huge rural estate (now winery) with his brother in law Edward Wollstonecraft (who gave his name to the suburb in Sydney). Berry obtained a grant of 10,000 acres and 100 convicts to build the settlement.
The town was a centre for cedar tree logging during the late 1800s, and tree trunks were floated down Broughton Creek to the mouth of the Shoalhaven River, then transported up to Sydney and beyond.
Berry, now with a population of more than 2,000 people is a great holiday destination. Berry accommodation is often located in the leafy surrounds of this beautiful town. Berry is renowned for its wonderful shops: from antiques, clothes, shoes and jewellery, to the tasty cafes, ice-cream shop, homewares and nurseries, you will find much to do here. So you will have no problem finding accommodation in Berry.
While here, visit Gerroa and Gerringong (Berry-by-the-sea!) only 10 minutes away, or take a spectacular drive across to Kangaroo Valley (about 20 minutes by car) over either Woodhill Mountain or Berry Mountain and see some of the best countryside NSW can offer.
There is some great bushwalking in the area: Barren Grounds Nature Reserve, Drawing Room Rocks Walk, Red Rocks Nature Reserve Walk, Upper Kangeroo Valley Walks (see Berry Activities for more information).
Also, while in the area, visit Bundanon near Nowra, home to one of Australia's most famous artists, Arthur Boyd and his wife Yvonne. They gifted to the nation their home and the land at Riversdale next door. Renowned architect Glen Murcutt designed an award winning educational facility at Riversdale which is used for workshops. Bundanon is open to the public every Sunday. Take a picnic and enjoy a day on the Shoalhaven River.
